The Islanders lost again last night to a low Ducks team and get a matchup that has heavily favored them over the past few years going 10-1. This is a different year for both teams. Columbus is surprising the league offensively and they’re doing it without the late Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine. Sean Monahan and Kiril Marchenko have led this offense with 20 points between the two of them propelling the Jackets offense to fifth overall with 4.13 goals per game. The Islanders are tied for second worst in the league averaging 2.33 goals per game being shut out three times already and being held to one goal last night against Anaheim. I’m surprised the total on this game can be had at 5.5 for -160. The Islanders have shown they can score with 3 or more goals in every game they weren’t held to one goal or less. Knowing which Islanders offense you are getting is the problem. The Isles special teams are also at the bottom of the league; they are fifth worse on the power play and third worse on the penalty kill. There should be opportunities for both teams to score tonight and the Isles know they need a win. I’m going to jump on this 5.5 total expecting Columbus to put up a minimum of two goals and the Isles offense getting back on track. I don’t see a scenario where this game stays low scoring or is a goalie duel. The worst case scenario we see here is a 2-2 OT game so a +360 overtime hedge isn’t the worst consideration. At worst I see us with a 3-2 lead late in the third sweating an empty net but I think this game gets to six.
I’m not sure what the books are seeing here offering the Jackets team total at 3 and 2.5 being only -210 right now. This is a double up situation where I want Winnipeg at 3 pregame so we don’t risk losing out, and then jumping on 2.5 live once it gets to the -140 range. Winnipeg is a juggernaut and they are coming off a loss to the Leafs where they still scored four goals.
