Friday 1/3 NHL Breakdown

The 10u result was disappointing last night. The game started with the pace and opportunities we needed to hit the over but were denied prime chances by both Sorokin and Woll. I fell asleep after the Avs went down 2-0 but was pleasantly surprised to wake up to their total hitting and the Seattle game going over. We have five games in play tonight and one particularly has my attention.

Take it or leave it in Florida. Neither team has played consistent enough to trust their offenses as of late. The Panthers have been shut out four times in their last ten games all while healthy. Spencer Knight is expected to start and Tristan Jarry has already been confirmed for Pittsburgh. The Panthers ML is too high and I don’t care to take the Pens +175 in hopes of a back to back win against them. Pitt did win their last meeting in overtime a month ago today. There’s other matchups on the board I prefer and this is one we can jump on live if its a wide open start.

I don’t play Montreal often, if ever, but they paid us off nicely before the Christmas break. They are 7-3 in their last ten and Patrik Laine’s arrival has made a difference. The Canadiens were 8-13-3 before Laine returned from injury and are 9-4 since moving them ahead of Detroit and Buffalo in the division with Laine posting 8 goals and 2 assists. Montreal is sitting three points out of a playoff spot right now and have a juicy matchup against a Blackhawks team they’ve won four in a row against. Laine has 18 goals in 29 games against the Blackhawks making him and the Canadiens even more intriguing. I don’t like that this game is on the road for them (7-10-1) so I will keep this play light.

I like Ottawa in this spot on the road. St. Louis has struggled against top caliber teams while excelling against low level teams. Ottawa comes in above that threshold and hold the last wild card spot in the East. The line is low at 105 and their team total opens up at 2.5. They’re barely an underdog but should win this game.

Anaheim and Edmonton played less than a week ago and here’s what I wrote:

“Edmonton has scored four or more goals in ten of the last thirteen games against the Ducks and scored at least three in all thirteen. They’ve won 11 of those matchups. I don’t like paying -160 for 3.5 team totals, especially on the road but they’ve scored four or more in six of the last eight in Anaheim. We all know who the Oilers are and what they bring to the table offensively night in and night out so there isn’t much analysis needed her. Both teams are on back to backs and Lukas Dostal started last night. Dostal is 1-3 in five starts against the Oilers with a 4.67 GAA but those numbers are flawed. Dostal came in relief in two appearances giving up 1 goal on only 9 shots and two goals on 10 shots. He was pulled in a blow out appearance giving up six goals in an 8-2 loss. In his two full starts against the Oilers hes made a total of 76 saves on 81 shots. This is a matchup where the trend is scorching hot and need to play over the course of the season to get the full value out of it. This is the first meeting of the season between the two so I will come back to this game tomorrow once goalies are confirmed.”

Now that they’re home the line for 3.5 is -250 and the line of 4 is -185. If we want this game we need to play a 4.5 total which I never do. I was looking forward to playing this game the most until I pulled up the lines so now we must wait. I’m going to keep our plays to what we have below and start breaking down tomorrow’s semifinals matchups in the IIHF.
