Sunday 12/29 NHL Breakdown

Coming off a 13 game losing streak Buffalo has now won two in a row. If they win again tomorrow that’s called a winning streak. The Sabres should not be +105 tomorrow and I can’t understand how the books have the Blues at only -125. St. Louis is 8-7 under Jim Montgomery. 5 of those losses are against Edmonton, Dallas, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, and Florida. St. Louis currently sits out of a wild card spot and has played three more games than the Dallas Stars who they sit three points behind. There weren’t many expectations for the Blues coming into this season but they have exceeded them, and a matchup against the Sabres is one they should win. This game can go either way for the Blues by either putting up 2, 3, or 6. I see this as a 3-2 / 4-2 win for them and I’m willing to splash the correct score. Either way, I expect the Blues to end this mini two game streak the Sabres have that all of a sudden makes the books think they are credible.

Edmonton has scored four or more goals in ten of the last thirteen games against the Ducks and scored at least three in all thirteen. They’ve won 11 of those matchups. I don’t like paying -160 for 3.5 team totals, especially on the road but they’ve scored four or more in six of the last eight in Anaheim. We all know who the Oilers are and what they bring to the table offensively night in and night out so there isn’t much analysis needed her. Both teams are on back to backs and Lukas Dostal started last night. Dostal is 1-3 in five starts against the Oilers with a 4.67 GAA but those numbers are flawed. Dostal came in relief in two appearances giving up 1 goal on only 9 shots and two goals on 10 shots. He was pulled in a blow out appearance giving up six goals in an 8-2 loss. In his two full starts against the Oilers hes made a total of 76 saves on 81 shots. This is a matchup where the trend is scorching hot and need to play over the course of the season to get the full value out of it. This is the first meeting of the season between the two so I will come back to this game tomorrow once goalies are confirmed.

This is a matchup I am willing to pay the -165 for the 3.5 team total. We hit the Lightning on the money line and on the team total in their matchup against the Rangers last night. We avoided the Panthers at home against the Canadiens earlier in the day and that paid off as well. Now we get Tampa Bay at home against a Montreal team coming off a shutout win of the Panthers and a team they’ve scored four or more goals against in nine of the last ten. Tampa Bay has treated us very well lately and they are fully healthy. Sam Montembeault is 1-2-1 in four starts against the Lightning with a 3.38 GAA and .895 SV%. How this game goes is up to Tampa Bay themselves.

We get a rematch in Pittsburgh against the Islanders and we are going right back to where we were yesterday. I’m doubling down on all the props expecting Pittsburgh to do what they fell short of. I will need to adjust the lines of the points props once they are posted.
